Dog days at the market

Today Was a Good Day

We love farmers’ markets – the food, the dogs, the people, and in this case, the booze! What a surprise to be tasting delicious alcoholic concoctions at 10:30 in the morning. I think people brought their dogs in case they drank too much at least someone would be able to find their way home.

These photos were taken at the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market on Vancouver Island, Canada. Such zeal towards food production was energizing and satisfying, but not inexpensive. I wonder if the farmers didn’t grow their own food could they afford to buy it?

I love the dogs and the dog-thoughts. ( I do that all the time, with my pets.) The two trolls look pretty spiffy. That’s some sophisticated farmers’ market, what with the booze and weed attractions. Can you describe a sunrise apple, relative to some more familiar type? Looks like a good time, all in all. Hope you made it safely back to civilization.

It was a fascinating farmers’ market. I took so many pictures of produce, flowers, products, and dogs it was hard to pick just a few for this post. As for making it back to civilization, I suppose that’s what you could call where we are. It is very quiet in the capital with a federal election underway and all the members of Parliament back in their homes campaigning. The Sunrise apple is in the last photo, the one on the right. The name describes the colour perfectly. The taste is tart – something like a Mac or a Lobo (a local Ontario apple? Not sure.) but much juicier. The inside is white and the crunch could wake the neighbours. It doesn’t travel well, as in you have to eat it within a day or two of picking or it goes mealy and mushy so you don’t find them in supermarkets. I’d travel a long way for another fresh one of these apples!

Where’s the birthday hat in the trolls pic? Looks like a great day!

We were about to board a ferry and I didn’t want it to blow overboard. It was a GREAT day!

Well, dogs are party animals. Of course they party their way and we party ours. Reconnoitering the ground and finding a stash of tissue paper that came from God-know-where is for them a candidate for an out-of-body experience. When was the last time a discarded, germ-filled piece of everyday tissue enthralled you? See what I mean? Naturally martinis don’t really say that much to them. Go figure.

Dogs, food and spirits high and liquid. Brilliant combo. Cheers —

Aha, you went to the farmer’s market. You sure looked like you enjoyed the dogs more than anything else. I must admit, I do the same when the furries bring their humans with them.

I’m sure the ratio of dogs to humans was 1 to 2. At my own local market it is similar. I wonder what it is about farmer’s markets that brings out the dogs?

We like to take our dog to a farmer’s market, though it’s not to make sure we get home again 🙂 You’re very right about the prices though.
