Fluff, coyotes, and ducklings

pathThe front deck had just been newly coated with water seal this morning, then wouldn’t you know, the spring gods decided to let fly fluffy organic matter from seeding trees. It is the curse of this part of the world that every season generates stuff that floats through the air. The spring fluff is accumulating on the deck and sticking which is more than I can say for my thoughts.

It’s as though I’m a dandelion seed spinning in the pollen-thick breeze. There are many seeds but when they land they don’t germinate. There’s a tightness in my gut when I sit down to write, a kind of dread like I’m not up to the job. I look up and I see fluff. I look inside and I see fluff. I look on the front deck and I see stuck fluff.

Down on our creek  a new hatch of ducklings putter on the water, light as water bugs. When I see the fluff I think of the coyote that skulks through the underbrush. She’s done a good job of clearing out the beavers and rabbits. She must be hungry.

The ducklings are shepherded by two females. One sits on the grass with the babies while the other patrols the creek. What would they do if the coyote attacked? Abandon the babes? Peck it’s eyes out?

Fluff makes me think of dead ducklings. When I look at the blank page my head fills with it and I feel like a mama duck watching a cloud of exploding down.

The coyote has pups. I heard them yipping and howling about a month ago when I took my small, white dog out for his nocturnal pee. She’s teaching them to hunt and what better snack than a roosting brood. Two weeks ago when the eggs hatched there were 15 ducklings. I counted 8 this afternoon. Down for the count.

I’m feeling like my thoughts need to be gathered and tended, like mama duck needs to watch over her ducklings and nurse them into adulthood. They need 100% of my attention for a while, just until they grow some feathers and can fly away from the coyote. In other words, I’m going to take a blogging break for a while. I’ll be reading and following your posts but refraining from commenting and posting. I don’t know how long “a while” will be  but I do feel the need to settle into some quiet writing away from the screen.

Keep your pen on the page, friends, watch out for coyotes, and protect your ducklings.

Yours,

Susanne

Ducklings

Breaks are always good Susanne – I think I’m on one myself at the moment 🙂 [Though I can never keep from leaving a thought or two on posts ….. So opinionated!!] I hope some of your ducklings survive and that the writing comes along in the way you want it to. And if it doesn’t – enjoy your beautiful surroundings!! ❤

I walk the creek path every day keeping vigil on the ducklings. It’s quite a drama! Thanks my thoughtful blogging friend.

Yes – breaks are good things to do… all the best for it… enjoy… fluff around a bit… I’m heading for a break soon too – but possibly not for another couple of months.

Oh gee. I’ll probably resurface and you’ll be on a break. Important to rest and recharge, though, so do it when you must.

This internal rhythm has a drum kit and it’s sending me a very clear beat to keep time with. Thanks “D”.

Sometimes we’re too addicted to our screens. Taking a break and going offline can be good for you. So take it easy and enjoy being “off the grid”.

I cannot tell a lie – I like the likes but I’m so swamped right now and will be through June that I have to scale some things back or I’ll go bonkers. I’ll pick up your posts soon. Take care.

“I’ll be back.” (Read like you’re a certain ex-California governor.) I like blogging too much to stay away but I’m just so fractured right now and having a really hard time focusing. Too many big life changes happening and I need to settle my little self down. Thanks as always for your kindness, Luanne.

I hope the break helps you collect as you want, and you come roaring back. ps we have cottonwoods on our island, and it releases white “snow” so deep it drifts. So now I’m thinking of myself as drifting . . . .

It’s so important to break and let yourself replenish when you need to. Mother duck yourself and we will all still be here when you venture back again. It might amuse, in the meantime, to know that my childhood nickname coined by my Grandmother and adopted by my Father was ‘Fluff’ …. no-one can remember why and since they both died it has gone but your reference to the endless irritation of fluff made me smile broadly!
